Jareth has a crush on Hoggle, but he is too shy to confess his feelings. It is understandable how an ordinary person watching ''The Labyrinth'' may confuse Jareth's actions with hatred, but I am going to explain how what one really sees is a fleeting romance.

After they escape from the Oubliette Sarah tells Hoggle he is her only friend in the Labyrinth, a comment that appears to genuinely surprise him. After Hoggle abandons Sarah out of fear, he is cornered by Jareth who orders him to give Sarah an enchanted peach. Jareth bullies Hoggle during their encounter, telling him that Sarah couldn’t possibly consider a creature such as him a friend. Jareth tells Hoggle that if Sarah ever kisses him, he will make him prince of the land of stench. Although wracked by guilt and indecision, Hoggle ultimately does as he is told and gives Sarah the peach. He is guilt stricken and flees to the Junk City alone to contemplate what he has done.
Jareth belittles Hoggle plenty of times during the cinematic masterpiece, ''The Labyrinth''. By making fun of Hoggle, Jareth is making sure the little dwarf doesn't catch on. He cares so much for Hoggle that he makes fun of him to preserve their friendship. He gets Hoggle's name wrong on purpose. Jareth calls him pet names: Hoggie, My Pet, Hogbae, Bae, etc. Jareth may have more of an obsession than a hatred for Hoggle.

Hoggle redeems himself at the end of the film by saving Sarah, [[Ludo]] and [[Sir Didymus]] from the giant robot Humongous, jumping onto the robot from above and disabling it. Sarah forgives Hoggle for his betrayal, and he helps her reach the Goblin King's castle. At the end of the film, Hoggle appears in Sarah mirror and is summoned into her room along with various other creatures from the Labyrinth to celebrate her victory.
Jareth also threatens Hoggle. He tells Hoggle to "get rid of Sarah" or else he will make Hoggle, Prince of the Bog of Eternal Stench. Little do many know, the "Bog of Eternal Stench" is really the Goblin King's bedroom. When you think about it, the Goblin King's words are empty. Have you ever seen him act upon them? Whenever Jareth confronts Hoggle, he always lovingly pokes Hoggle with his horse whip. And have you ever wondered why Jareth wears such tight pants and pushes his crotch Hoggle's way? Jareth is trying to impress Hoggle with his size so they can f**k.

A good portion of ''The Labyrinth ''is Jareth getting jealous of Sarah handling Hoggle. After learning about Sarah's plot to use Hoggle for her own pleasure, Jareth makes it his crusade to demoralize her and get Hoggle away from her. Jareth tried to trick Sarah into eating a poisoned fruit, but she saw through his trick and hunted Hoggle with more fervor. Jareth sent his scariest in command to push Sarah away from Hoggle, but she managed to brainwash them into fighting for her. He did what was humane and tried to kill them quickly. Jareth had enough of Sarah and talked to her himself. He called her a "repulsive, little scab" that Hoggle would never f**k willingly. He even went as far to say that Hoggle would rather die than kiss her. Sarah became disheartened after their conversation. She decided to finish the maze and leave without her Hoggle prize.

Jareth did whatever was possible to protect his Hoggle and rid of Sarah. By the end of the movie Jareth gathers the courage to propose. Hoggle says yes, and they get themselves to the "Bog of Eternal Stench." Unfortunately, Jim Henson cut this part out before the movie was released because he wanted to the rating to be lower than "M" for mature.

A couple years back I bought the original uncut version (with David Bowie explaining the Jareth x Hoggle's intimate relationship dynamics). My outlook on life and on ''The Labyrinth'' has changed forever, but I come to these wikis and I see a completely different Labyrinth. Sarah as the protagonist? What?

The Novelization

Return to Labyrinth

In the Return to Labyrinth manga, Hoggle has literally become the Prince of the Bog of Eternal Stench just as Jareth promised him. He lives in a small cottage in the Bog, has several goblin underlings and sits on a small throne.

Hoggle appears again in the fourth volume of the series, helping Moppet in her quest to find Sarah.

Hoggle and the Worm

Hoggle features in Archaia comic's Labyrinth short story, Hoggle and the Worm.

Personality

Hoggle is a crochety and lonely figure, and initially rejects Sarah's attempts to befriend him. He is repeatedly humiliated by his master Jareth, and his poor treatment results in Hoggle's being deeply distrustful of those around him.

Despite his initial coldness, Hoggle eventually comes to care for Sarah and helps her reach Jareth's Castle. His courage in helping Sarah results in his developing a more noble persona, and at the end of the film he is shown to be a brave and caring friend.

Abilities

Hoggle appears to act as a caretaker to the Labyrinth, working in Jareth's employ and keeping the fairy population under control. He has a good level of knowledge of the Labyrinth and its tricks, and is able to calmly and quickly free Sarah from an Oubliette using a magic door.
