David Bowie (8 January 1947 - 10 January 2016) was an English musician and actor.

Bowie played Jareth the Goblin King in Labyrinth. Bowie also appeared in photos at the start of the film, portraying Jeremy.

Bowie first came to prominence in 1969 when his single Space Oddity made the top five in the UK Singles Chart. This success was followed by a lull of several years, which was broken upon the release of the hit album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars in 1972. The album resulted in international fame for Bowie, who went on to conduct tours across the world.

Bowie's first major acting role came in 1976 with the lead role in Nicholas Roeg's science fiction film The Man Who Fell To Earth. Bowie won praise for his performance, and went on to appear in The Hunger (1983) and Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence (1983).

Bowie was first sought out by Jim Henson to feature in Labyrinth in summer 1983, when he was in America as part of his Serious Moonlight tour. Bowie recorded his songs for the film's soundtrack some time prior to the start of filming in April 1985. Despite having met with Henson several times to discuss Labyrinth since 1983, Bowie did not formally agree to take part in the project until February 1985.

After Bowie released the album Reality in 2003, he had only performed occasionally, stayed out of the spotlight, and was considered by many to be in retirement. However, this proved not to be the case. On his 66th birthday in 2013 Bowie surprised and delighted fans by releasing the single Where Are We Now and announcing the upcoming release of The Next Day, his first album of new music in a decade. The Next Day was released worldwide in March 2013.
